Hospital ChairsThe University of Arkansas System has extended health insurance coverage to the legally married spouses of their gay employees. In a historic policy memo, the University System's general counsel invokes Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza ruling last week finding the state's ban on marriage equality unconstitutional

In his memo, UA General Counsel Fred Harrison told university administrators, “With respect to the University’s medical benefit plan any same sex couple married in Arkansas or married in another state recognizing same sex marriage shall be eligible for coverage under the plan."

The announcement comes as HRC launches Project One America, an unprecedented effort to dramatically expand gay equality in Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama. HRC is making a deep and lasting $8.5 million investment concentrated in these three states. An office with dedicated staff will soon open in Little Rock.
