Post submitted by Maureen McCarty, former HRC Deputy Director of Marketing

On Saturday, Thomas Roberts took a seat behind the desk at NBC’s Nightly News, making him the first openly gay anchor of an evening news program on a major television network.

Roberts stepped in for Lester Holt, who is the regular anchor of Nightly News. The 42-year-old journalist hosts MSNBC Live with Thomas Roberts during the week.

HRC congratulates Roberts on his achievement and celebrates the moment as a symbol of the ever-increasing visibility of LGBT individuals in media.
