Let’s have some real talk. Did you know that currently in 29 states there is no state law that can protect you from being fired or denied employment based on your sexual orientation? Or that number goes up to 33 states if you are transgender? It’s ridiculous. It’s absurd. It goes against every idea that this country was founded on. The most basic American value is that everyone has the opportunity to be paid for a fair day’s work, no matter who you are.
That’s why Americans for Workplace Opportunity (AWO) is fighting to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) federally. This bill extends legal protections to LGBT folks all over the country. It doesn’t say you need to havex number gay employees. It contains broad exemptions for religious organizations. All it does, is say that you can’t be fired or not hired based on your sexual orientation or gender identity, just as you can’t be fired or not hired for your religion, race, or disability.
But this bill won’t pass itself and AWO is cracking away in IL-16. We’re canvassing in Rockford and DeKalb. We’re talking to small businesses all over the region. We’re making phone calls to let Congress know how we feel about ENDA. Everywhere we have gone we have received so much support. That’s because nearly 80% of Americans support LGBT protections in the workplace, including 70% of Republicans.
If we work together I promise you that we will leave no stone unturned, leave no town uncanvassed, and leave no American out of the American Dream.
