Today, during the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting, members approved a resolution which essentially denies the lived experience of transgender individuals everywhere.
The delegates affirmed that "God's design was the creation of two distinct and complementary sexes, male and female." and that "gender identity is determined by biological sex, not by one's self-perception.”
The resolution which passed without discussion, opposes hormone therapy; transition related care and other efforts to “alter one’s bodily identity." Delegates also expressed opposition to government efforts to “validate transgender identity as morally praiseworthy” and call on transgender people to "trust in Christ and to experience renewal in the Gospel."
This is hardly the first time that this denomination has come out against LGBT people, and their staunch anti-equality views which are at odds with most Americans, continue to cost them members and churchgoers. Since 1976, The Southern Baptist Convention has passed numerous resolutions that repeatedly assert the church’s commitment to preach, teach and politically organize against LGBT people and their supporters.
