Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY), New York’s first openly gay member of Congress, married his partner of 22 years on Saturday.
He and his partner, Randy Gene Florke, have three children from ages 11 to 24. The two exchanged vows at the Church of St. Mary-in-the-Highlands in Cold Spring, New York, according to CBS New York. Florke, 51, proposed to Maloney, 47, in December after their daughter Essie asked Santa for her dads to get married.
Last year, Maloney responded to Representative Michele Bachmann’s refusal to include same-sex families in an adoption month resolution she was sponsoring. He shared his personal story of raising family and asked her to include same-sex families in the resolution, but she ignored his proposal.
Rep. Maloney is New York’s first openly gay member of Congress and only one of two representatives with a same-sex partner. HRC congratulates Rep. Maloney on his marriage and this historic occasion.
