The San Antonio Express-News recently published a secretly recorded audio clip of San Antonio Councilwoman Elisa Chan and city staff discussing a proposal to add sexual orientation, gender identity, and veteran status to the city’s nondiscrimination ordinance.
In the recording, the District 9 councilwoman is heard expressing her anti-LGBT opinions while inside her city hall office. She notes several times that she does not publically discuss these opinions because of their “political incorrectness.”
“I never bought in that you are born gay. I can’t imagine that … I never would say that outside because they kill me when I say that’s more of a behavioral preference. They say, ‘No, you are born with it,’ but I never bought into that.”
As the staff goes on to further discuss the LGBT community with derision, Chan interjects again to reinforce her homophobia. “I think it’s disgusting to even think about,” said Chan.
At one point in the recording, an unidentified man tells another staff member that acceptance of loving, committed same-sex couples was a slippery slope to bestiality and incest.
“The road that we’re going, Jackie, incest and being able to marry animals, that’s all going to happen,” said the unidentified staff member.
Later in the recording, Chan is heard railing against same-sex couples adopting children because “it’s against nature.”
Her staff advises Chan that she should “go down kicking and screaming” and to vote against the bill because of a need for smaller government and “family values.”
The Council is expected to vote on the additions on September 5. HRC has been on the ground since January assisting the local coalition Community Alliance for a United San Antonio (CAUSA) in urging the city council to pass an ordinance prohibiting discrimination against LGBT people in employment, housing and public accommodations.
Tell the San Antonio City Council to support the non-discrimination ordinance.
