The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) held it’s 40th Annual Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., on September 15th-18th. The CBC represents all of the black members of Congress. For over 10 years, HRC’s political and diversity departments have participated in attending the conference.

Many students find it difficult to learn, thrive and dream of their futures because of school-based bullying (both traditional and cyber bullying) . We know that bullying is pervasive in our schools. National prevalence studies consistently show that roughly one in five students have been bullied regularly and a similar number have bullied others.

Today, House Republican leaders released their “Pledge to America,” outlining how they would govern should they win back control of the House in November. While the document focuses heavily on economic issues, its “pledge” also includes hostility to LGBT equality, promising support for “traditional marriage” and, in a thinly-veiled attack on LGBT advances through legislation and the courts, criticizing actions that “thwart the will of the people and overturn their votes and their values.” While the document itself doesn’t tell as much more about how these Republicans would treat our community, the lengthy record of anti-LGBT efforts during a decade of Republican control of Congress speaks volumes. LGBT people should see this “Pledge” for what it really is – a promise to try and turn back the clock on the LGBT equality on Capitol Hill.

In a major victory for lesbian and gay Floridians, the State’s intermediate Court of Appeals ruled in Florida Dept. of Children and Families v. In re: Matter of Adoption of X.X.G. and N.R.G. that Florida’s statute excluding homosexuals from adopting was unconstitutional under the Florida Constitution.
