Senate Adopts Unwelcomed Amendments to Hate Crimes Bill

Today the U.S. Senate adopted four amendments to the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act -- three of which were strongly opposed by the Human Rights Campaign. Once the Senate votes on the final Defense Department authorization bill it will go to a conference committee with the House where HRC urges the amendments to be removed.

The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights released a letter today to Senators urging them to defeat Sen. Sessions' amendments to the hate crimes bill to add the death penalty and to force the Attorney General to create unnecessary regulations. Votes are expected on the Senate floor later today.
