Last Friday six HRC members from Seguin, Texas went to visit one of the district offices of Representative Henry Cuellar to meet with the Congressman’s district staff. Carol Gates, Ginny Balter, Mark Gonzales, Whitney Bischoff, Susan Jennings, Bob Harloff, Kathy YandellCarol sent in this report: “It was a great meeting and we all had the sense that Mark Gonzales, Cuellar’s Outreach Director , was really listening. He asked questions, and took many notes. After thanking Mark for the Congressman’s vote in support of the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act I spoke about repealing the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)

Gay and Lesbian couples in Vermont will be able to legally marry in the Green Mountain state effective today. It was only nine years ago that the term civil unions was created in a Vermont legislative committee room by Vermont House members seeking a way to give gay and lesbian couples equal marriage rights but not calling it marriage. That then-historic move, making Vermont the first state to grant significant benefits to its gay and lesbian couples, is now just that, history.
