An air of excitement moved through the Equality Forum at the Human Rights Campaign last week. A diverse crowd of forty, including couples, seasoned community advocates, and excited neophytes, gathered for a couples meet and greet hosted by HRC and the DC marriage collaborative. The cause, to galvanize support for a continuing marriage equality education initiative, is entrenched in a broader undertaking by the DC marriage collaborative and HRC, to make inroads, build relationships and overcome differences within the community.

The Argus Leader recently printed a letter from Lynn, a Sioux Falls veteran who supports repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. Lynn writes: "I was in the Navy before Don't Ask, Don't Tell, but it's time for Congress to repeal this law. The ban on gays and lesbians in the military always has been a vague threat for those of us who choose to serve. As a veteran who served in a reconnaissance attack squadron in Key West during the 1970s, there were few women stationed with me, and many of us volunteered for the hardest duties possible to prove our worth."

In a historic decision for equal marriage, today a federal court ruled Proposition 8 -- California's ban on marriage for same-sex couples -- to be unconsitutional. Chief Judge Vaughn Walker of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in Perry v. Schwarzenegger, declared that the amendment to the California Constitution adopted in November 2008, violates the U.S. Constitution’s guarantees of equal protection and due process. The real heroes here are the plaintiff couples Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo & Kristin Perry and Sandy Stier. These two committed couples decided they would not be silent while Proposition 8 declared their relationships unworthy of a marriage license.
