The fight for LGBT equality in the Ocean State continues to build momentum with the opening of Rhode Islanders United for Marriage’s new campaign action center on Valentine’s Day. The event celebrated the opening of the campaign’s state of the art action center where volunteers will be able to participate in voter contact, phonebank and canvass programs to ensure the passage of marriage. HRC has contributed over 20 computers and phones to use in the action center.
The event was widely attended by elected officials, including Governor Chaffee, local media and over 100 volunteers. After a couple speeches, we all hit the phones to call Rhode Islanders across the state to urge them to call their Senators in support of marriage. Even Governor Chaffee and the Lieutenant Governor jumped on the phone calling key constituents urging them to call their state Senators to support marriage.
Momentum is on our side, following the strong House of Representatives' vote in favor of marriage equality last month. We expect a vote in the state Senate sometime this spring.
HRC is committed to passing marriage equality in Rhode Island, the last state in New England to approve marriage legislation. We are proud to work alongside Marriage Equality Rhode Island and GLAD staff and dozens of volunteers from across this small state with a big heart.
