Post submitted by David Contreras Turley, former HRC Associate Regional Field Director
With the New Year in full swing, marriage equality efforts in the Ocean State are off to a strong start. I am in Providence this morning, where HRC participated in the launch of Rhode Islanders United for Marriage, the campaign made up of organizations working together to win full civil marriage rights for all Ocean State families and couple in loving and committed relationships.
HRC is committed to passing marriage equality in Rhode Island, as it was Maryland, Maine and Washington this past year. We will be working with business, faith and union support to ensure that the State Legislature here too signs marriage equality into law. The Rhode Island House Judiciary Committee is to hear the bill this week and a successful vote is expected to take place this month. Once it passes the House, the Senate will take up the bill. We are working with our supporters in the Senate to ensure we have the needed votes to pass marriage. Governor Chafee is ready to sign marriage equality legislation without delay.
HRC is currently on the ground as a partner of Rhode Islanders United for Marriage, hoping to bring marriage equality to the final state in New England.
