RI Senate Judiciary CommitteeIn a historic move, the Rhode Island Senate Judiciary Committee voted 7-4 to recommend S38, the marriage equality bill, to the full Senate. This move positions Rhode Island, the final state in New England, to pass marriage equality. This is the first time marriage equality legislation has ever received a vote in a Rhode Island Senate committee.  The vote on the full floor of the Senate will be tomorrow.

Today’s historic committee vote comes on the heels of the Senate Republican Caucus announcement earlier today expressing their unanimous support for the bill.

The Rhode Island House of Representatives passed the marriage equality bill earlier this year. If the bill is amended on the Senate floor, the House will have to vote again. Governor Lincoln Chafee has been a strong supporter of marriage equality in Rhode Island and plans to sign the measure once it reaches his desk.
