According to a randomized spot-check, the anti-LGBT campaign to overturn California’s historic School Success and Opportunity Act has gathered enough signatures to trigger a full-count of all of the signatures acquired in the 58 counties, reported the Californian Secretary of State’s Election Division.
The state requires 504,760 valid signatures in order to put the referendum on the November ballot, which will take an additional 30 business days to determine.
Repeal of AB1266 is a mean-spirited effort by groups determined to undermine any measure of LGBT protections.
To bolster support for repeal, the anti-LGBT campaign, which is backed by the discriminatory National Organization for Marriage, has mislead the public with fictitious stories of harassment and scare tactics around “privacy.”
In truth, the School Success and Opportunity Act, which went into effect on January 1, addresses the exclusion of transgender students from classes and activities to ensure all students are provided the same opportunities.
HRC will continue to monitor this process. Stay tuned to the HRC Blog for more updates.
