HRC’s Athletes for Equality have hit the ground running in 2013 across America, racing for equality in three races, to include next month’s 38th Annual Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC. Although this year has brought many victories for the LGBT community, we know the finish line for our movement is still off in the horizon, so we are lacing up our running shoes and putting one foot in front of the other for 2014.
Today we are thrilled to announce that Athletes for Equality registration is now live for two upcoming races in March of 2014 - the ASICS LA Marathon March 9 and our return to the Publix Georgia Marathon/Half-Marathon & 5k on March 23.
In Atlanta last year, over 30 athletes came from 10 states to run one of this city’s signature races on behalf of the HRC Foundation. This course takes over 16,000 runners through some of the most historically relevant monuments of the civil rights movement. Runners begin at Piedmont Park, take in the sites of Georgia State University, and even cruise by the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
In addition to returning to Atlanta, for the first time we are bringing the Athletes program to the west coast, forming our inaugural team for the ASICS LA Marathon. With Prop 8 in the history books we will be running in celebration, but also with resolve for victories not yet won. HRC Athletes will run with over 24,000 other participants from Dodger stadium all the way to the finish line on scenic Ocean Blvd. in Santa Monica.
Our team for the ASICS LA Marathon offers a unique opportunity for our athletes - the relay option. You and a friend can both sign up as Athletes for Equality and split the distance in half, each running 13.1 miles of the marathon. We’ll even help you create a team fundraising page.
The Athletes for Equality program offers both new and experienced athletes alike an opportunity to give back, while pushing themselves in the name of equality. Each participant commits to raising a minimum amount of funds to help make our nation’s schools, hospitals, and workplaces safer and more equal. To help get you across the finish line, HRC will provide a tailored training program, weekend long runs, fundraising support and team camaraderie. And of course, we’ll outfit you in some slick HRC Athletes for Equality gear!
Don’t delay, join one of our Athletes for Equality teams today and help keep our movement running forward! For more information, or to join a team, visit http://www.hrc.org/athletes-for-equality/registration#.UjhbMMaTioM
