Richard Blanco will have the distinct honor of composing an original poem for the President’s swearing-in cermony on January 21.

Obama chose Blanco because his “deeply personal poem are rooted in the idea of what it means to be an American,” reported the NY Times.

He is the first Latino or openly gay inaugural poet, and will join the ranks of previous prestigious artists, including Maya Angelou and Robert Frost.

We’re pleased to see an openly LGBT artist share in President Obama’s inauguration ceremony.
