In mid-July notorious hate group Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) recorded a homophobic parody of Panic! At the Disco’s classic hit "I Write Sins Not Tragedies". Not satisfied with simple online trolling, the WBC also announced they would picket one of Panic's concerts. Once Panic! learned that WBC was going to target their show in Kansas City, the internationally-renowned band confronted the group on Twitter with a challenge: Today @WBCSays is going to picket us. For every member of WBC that actually shows up we will donate $20 to @HRC #pride2014
Last month, the band also partnered with HRC to create a limited-edition t-shirt inspired by their music video "Girls/Girls/Boys." The rainbow tie-dyed tee featuring HRC’s iconic red and pink marriage equality raised a significant chunk of change. Since the band announced its unequivocal support for HRC they have raised a total of $35,000 for the fight for LGBT equality and will continue to donate via the release of a mobile game entitled "Panic! In Vegas" of which part of the proceeds will be donated to HRC.
By taking a stand against WBC, Panic! At the Disco sent a powerful message to millions of young fans across the world about the power of love and acceptance. HRC thanks Panic! At the Disco for their donation and for starting a conversation and raising awareness against hate, homophobia and transphobia.
