Post submitted by Trevor Chandler, former HRC Associate Regional Field Director
I’m excited to be on the ground in Oregon where Oregon United for Marriage today announced that we have the petitions in hand and are ready to move forward with the "Oregon Says I Do" campaign to collect the 116,284 signatures necessary to put on the ballot in November 2014 a measure that would strike Ballot Measure 36 and replace it with pro-marriage equality language.
Starting tomorrow, Oregon United campaign staff and volunteers will spread out across every part of the state making sure supporters of marriage equality have the opportunity to be part of this historic campaign. If successful, Oregon will be the first state to repeal a state constitutional ban on marriage equality.
HRC is a proud board member of the Oregon United for Marriage campaign and is already on the ground working with other partners of Oregon United for Marriage. HRC is providing the campaign’s Faith Director, as well as staff to get the campaign up and running. Additionally, members of the HRC Portland Steering Committee are serving as Rapid Response Petition Captains.
Even though we only just received the petitions, behind the scenes Oregon United has been building a Rapid Response Petition Team of over 1,100 Oregonians who volunteered to be ready at a moment's notice to help us get to the initial goal of 10,000 signatures in the first 10 days.
Trevor Chandler is a Senior Regional Field Organizer with HRC. He is on the ground for the duration of the campaign working with the team at OUM to secure marriage equality for all Oregonians.
