Post submitted by Trevor Chandler, former HRC Associate Regional Field Director

Earlier today HRC and our partners at Oregon United for Marriage launched a coordinated effort to defeat an initiative that would specifically allow discrimination against same-sex couples called Oregon United Against Discrimination. The group working to pass this initiative has until July 3 to collect almost 90,000 signatures in order to qualify for the ballot, as of today they have not yet been approved to start collecting signatures.

As a part of the campaign kick-off, Oregon United put out its first ad, featuring civil rights hero Kathleen Saadat. She powerfully makes the case against the initiative using examples of discrimination from her own past. I remember in the hot summer spending my last money to go apply for a job, climbing three flights of steps, seeing a sign that said, 'Whites only'. "To pick and choose who you serve, that's discrimination."
