The United States Office of Personnel Management has begun the process of extending federal rights and benefits to married gay and lesbian federal employees and their families.

Just two days after the Supreme Court struck down section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, the OPM has released guidance on the impact of the decision and assured employees it would act swiftly to implement the Court’s ruling.

Now that the federal government recognizes legally married same-sex couples, federal employees’ spouses and their families may now access health insurance benefits, life insurance, dental and vision insurance and retirement benefits.
