Just one year ago, the LGBT and allied community looked toward the U.S. Supreme Court as it prepared to hear oral arguments in two historic marriage equality cases, Hollingsworth v. Perry and Windsor v. United States.
Intent on making the most out of the two days of oral arguments on March 26 & 27, the Human Rights Campaign took advantage of every opportunity and angle to advance the marriage movement.
From digital advocacy to off-line support, HRC conceived and led a multi-faceted campaign to win over even more hearts and minds. Today, this is campaign is perfectly encapsulated by the ubiquitous red equality logo.
The red marriage equality logo first appeared on HRC’s Facebook page at 2 p.m. on March 25, 2013. Within 24 hours, HRC’s Facebook post to encourage digital activists to change their social media profile pictures to a red and pink version of its ubiquitous logo received 189,177 shares, 95,725 likes, appeared over 18 million times in Newsfeeds, created upwards of 10 million impressions worldwide, and inspired countless memes. Facebook recorded a 120 percent increase in profile photo updates, and they deemed the effort the most successful campaign in their history.
While the campaign strategy has received countless accolades -- from Mashable to SXSW to PR Week -- what has impacted HRC most are the countless stories from supporters and members whose lives were directly touched by the red marriage equality logo.
