Today HRC is putting Robert Oscar Lopez and Scott Lively on notice. These Americans are part of a network of extremists working tirelessly to undercut LGBT people around the world at every turn.
Scott Lively is the head of Abiding Truths Ministry in Springfield, Massachusetts and is known around the world for his notorious work successfully advocating for anti-LGBT laws in Uganda that could send LGBT people to prison for life. In fact, Lively has travelled the world over presenting himself as an expert on LGBT issues, urging lawmakers to crack down on LGBT rights and the right of free expression.
In 2007, Lively wrote in “Letter to the Russian People,” “Homosexuality is a personality disorder that involves various often dangerous sexual addictions and aggressive anti-social impulses.”
Lively’s mission to block equality and spreading distortions and lies about LGBT people worldwide is having an impact. In fact, he takes personal credit for the passage of the Russian anti-gay “propaganda” law, which he claimed to propose in 2007.
Unlike Lively, Robert Oscar Lopez, a rising star on the anti-LGBT scene, is not formally associated with one organization. However, he has ventured abroad touting himself as an expert on the dangers same-sex parenting. Between March 2013 and April 2014, Lopez traveled to Europe at least four times to rail against anti-LGBT adoption.
Lopez’s strident rhetoric borders on violent. On multiple occasions, he has equated same-sex couples who wish to adopt to “slavers buying children,” and a crime against humanity.
“It begins with a plea for tolerance. Then comes the desire to be able to live together without being bothered. Good, no problem there,” Lopez wrote in a blog post in 2013. “Then comes the demand for legally recognized relationships. Then they go for educational curriculum, recruit children into homosexuality, take over the medical profession, and subvert the media. The final phase is the demand to own children as property, which results, ultimately, in the demand to have free global channels to buy and sell sperm, rent wombs, and traffic children.”
In a blog yesterday, Lopez attempts to further obfuscate the truth about his motives, claiming that he is not affiliated with the National Organization for Marriage. Indeed, Lopez holds no formal position at NOM. However, he was listed a featured speaker at NOM’s 2013 March for Marriage, a fact that NOM promoted as late as the day before the rally. Further, NOM has been publishing content by and about Lopez on their blogs since 2012.
HRC needs your help to stop Lively and Lopez from spreading their hateful mission worldwide. Send the message below and join us in helping to spead the truth about these American extremists!
