Moments ago, Nevada Republican Governor signed into law SB139, legislation adding gender identity and expression to the state's hate crimes law.
It was great to be invited to attend the signing ceremony.
In 2011, in his first year as Governor, Sandoval signed non-discrimination laws on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression in the areas of housing, employment and public accommodations.
Under the leadership of Senator Pat Spearman, Senator David Parks, and many others in the state legislature, this bill passed the state senate with all but one senator voting in favor and 30 to 11 in the state assembly. You may recall, this bill failed in the state senate in 2011 by one vote. Then Senator John Lee (D-1), failed to join his colleagues in supporting real protections for all Nevadans. During the 2012 primary, Spearman defeated Lee and introduced this bill as her first piece of legislation as state senator.
