Hate crimes are not new for LGBT Americans, a stark reality of the second-class citizenship we as a community must endure. Discrimination is embedded in our nation's laws, trickling down into our backyard. It feeds the bullying that our youth face in school, the anti-LGBT rhetoric uttered by homophobic legislators who refuse to recognize our loving, committed relationships, and the hate crimes we suffer at the hands of bigots.
And yet, as we reel in shock and horror of losing yet another one of our brothers to a hate-motivated crime, we must ask ourselves what we are going to do about it.
It is a paradigm of our social conscience that love conquers hate, yet it requires us to act. It is time we stood behind that message in support of all LGBT Americans, in every aspect of life, at all levels.
