On Wednesday we’re launching a huge blitz on campus at Northern Illinois University to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).

Our volunteers will be hitting the campus to encourage students to write letters, canvass, and make phone calls. We’ll be turning out everyone on campus to show support for workplace equality. Right now we’re the closest we have ever been to getting a fully-inclusive ENDA passed. We have 204 Members of Congress who publicly support the bill, and we need to get to 218. Congressman Adam Kinzinger, who represents the NIU area, is not yet a supporter of ENDA.

What’s so important about ENDA and why do we need to get this done right now? 

While Illinois has a state law protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender workers against workplace discrimination, there are no state laws prohibiting employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in 29 other states and on the basis of gender identity in 32 states.  So ENDA would not only be a big victory for lesbian, gay and bi people, but a MASSIVE victory for trans* folks around the country. A whopping 75% of trans* people say they have faced discrimination in the workplace, and these numbers go even higher for trans* people of color. The workplace remains one of the primary centers of discrimination against the trans* community and we are on the verge of passing a federal law against it.

ENDA passed the Senate with a strong bipartisan vote, and we have a supportive President itching to sign it into law. All we need now is to secure the majority needed in the House of Representatives to pass the bill. Right. Now.

Legislation such as ENDA does not get passed without people like you going all out to show Congress what we feel. Our stories matter. But if we don’t tell them our silence means nothing. 

We need to strike now, while the iron’s hot. Let’s get this done NIU.
