A new poll released today by Small Business Majority shows that more than two-thirds of small business owners support federal and state laws that protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from workplace discrimination.  The poll also showed that nearly 60% of those business owners believe that nondiscrimination protections helps their bottom line.  And, despite there being no federal law explicitly barring employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, 39% percent of small businesses reported having an LGBT-inclusive policy in their workplaces.       

Alongside the national findings, the poll also includes specific data from Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania.  Forty-one percent of respondents identified themselves as Republican or independent-leaning Republican, 36% as Democrat or independent-leaning Democrat and 15% as independent.

Today’s poll adds to wealth of data showing that businesses large and small benefit when LGBT people can be their whole selves at work.  It is further evidence that Congress must pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and the President must issue an executive order barring discrimination by federal contractors.  Every American deserves these core protections at work.
