Just in time for the 2015-2016 school year, HRC Foundation is proud to release its newest guide, Schools In Transition: A Guide for Supporting Transgender Students in K-12 Schools.
Made in partnership with the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Gender Spectrum, the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Education Association, the guide is a first-of-its-kind resource providing a blueprint for safe, supportive and inclusive school environments for transgender youth.
“We believe that parents…shouldn't have to rely on luck or happenstance to assure that their transgender children are learning in safe, affirming and inclusive schools,” HRC Foundation’s Director Children, Youth and Families Program Ellen Kahn wrote in an op-ed for The Advocate.“We believe that parents of transgender youth shouldn't have to fight — or expect a fight — when they advocate that their children are treated with respect and kept safe while at school.”
Written for administrators, teachers, parents and other adults who work with youth, the guide covers topics ranging from basic concepts of gender and the importance of affirming gender identity, to best practices for restroom access and working with unsupportive parents.
HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools program offers teachers and administrators guidance on supporting transgender children and ways to prevent gender stereotyping.
