Michael Sam is the newest star in Coca-Cola’s “#MakeItHappy” campaign.
In the video description, Coca-Cola explains, “Michael Sam has experienced firsthand how the Internet has grown increasingly negative. Watch as he channels this negativity into positivity and provides great advice for how to #MakeItHappy. “
“I see negativity daily,” he explains. “All the negativity that comes to me, I channel it back into positivity. I have to prove the haters wrong.”
The campaign, which aims at spreading positivity and happiness on the Internet, will air its first 30-second-spot during the first quarter of the Superbowl on Sunday.
Sam, who made history as America’s first openly gay professional football player, will be honored at HRC’s national Time to THRIVE conference in February.
“We are excited and privileged to recognize Michael Sam, and his brave commitment to leading an authentic life in a profession that has been historically unwelcoming to LGBT people,” said Vincent Pompei, chair of Time to THRIVE and director of the HRC Foundation’s Youth Well-Being Project. “By coming out, Michael sent an invaluable message to young LGBT Americans that anything is possible for them - even playing in the NFL.”
The Coca-Cola Company has a strong record of supporting LGBT equality and received a 100 on HRC Foundation’s 2015 Corporate Equality Index (CEI). The CEI is the national benchmarking tool on corporate policies and practices pertinent to LGBT employees.
