Today, Why Marriage Matters Ohio announced that veteran political strategist Michael Premo will lead the statewide marriage equality public education campaign.

Premo most recently ran the successful New Jersey campaign for marriage equality, New Jersey United for Marriage.

A broad coalition of organizations, including HRC, the ACLU of Ohio, Equality Ohio Education Fund, and Freedom to Marry, launched Why Marriage Matters Ohio in September.

The grassroots campaign aims to open hearts and minds to Ohio’s same-sex couples and their families. In 2004, a ballot amendment to Ohio’s constitution limited marriage to one man and one woman and prohibited legal status for same-sex couples.

Of the sixteen states, plus the District of Columbia, that recognize marriage equality, eight went into effect this year.
