Rhode Island State HousePost submitted by David Contreras Turley, former HRC Associate Regional Field Director

In a historic step forward for marriage equality in Rhode Island, the House of Representatives voted 51-19, passing marriage equality legislation (HB 5015) for the first time in the Ocean state. The excitement is palpable here. Supporters have been fighting for this moment for over 20 years.

Today's strong vote provides momentum for marriage equality in Rhode Island now that the bill is headed to the Senate. A majority of Rhode Islanders support marriage equality, as does Independent Governor Lincoln Chafee.

With staff on the ground, HRC is a proud member of Rhode Islanders United for Marriage, the broad and diverse coalition working to win marriage equality in the Ocean State.
