Identical marriage equality bills were introduced in both the Rhode Island House and Senate this evening – the latest sign of the growing momentum for marriage equality across the nation.

The Providence Journal reports that Rep. Arthur Handy and Sen. Donna Nesselbush introduced the bills. Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee is a strong supporter of marriage equality – last year, Chafee took steps to ensure that Rhode Island’s same-sex couples who were legally married in other states received from the state the same rights, benefits, and obligations as opposite-sex couples.

Marriage equality is legal throughout New England. Continue checking back with the HRC blog as these bills make their way through the Rhode Island legislature, and learn more about the state of marriage equality across the nation.
