Openly lesbian actress and comedian Lily Tomlin will be recognized at the Kennedy Center Honors later this year.
Tomlin, who married her partner of 42 years Jane Wagner in January, has had an extremely successful career on television and on the big screen. She is best known for her work on the 1970s TV show Laugh In and countless films including 9 to 5, The Incredible Shrinking Woman and I Heart Huckabees.
Tomlin has been out for many years, even when she began her career in the 1970’s. “Everybody in the industry was certainly aware of my sexuality and of Jane,” Tomlin told Just Out. “...in interviews I always reference Jane and talk about Jane, but they don't always write about it.”
President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will attend the annual gala. Other honorees this year include Tom Hanks, Al Green, Sting and Patricia McBride.
HRC congratulates Tomlin on yet another historic milestone. The event will take place on December 7 in Washington, D.C.
