The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) has adopted an inclusive housing policy for LGBT students. New inclusive housing assignments will be made upon request and provide flexibility to accommodate students who are gender non-conforming, gay or have other aspects of their culture or identity that require certain considerations with room assignments and residence communities.
The move, announced last week, is part of a broader effort to make UWM a welcoming institution for LGBT students. In recent years, UWM has prided itself on being one of the country’s most LGBT-friendly campuses. UWM was ranked No. 12 in Newsweek’s Daily Beast as a ‘Gay Friendly Campus’ in 2011. University leaders would like to see the school's rankings go even higher.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, in addition to UWM’s new policy, UW-La Crosse has announced inclusive housing within the university’s suite-style residence halls, and UW-Madison has a new learning community to step up inclusivity.
