Post submitted by Whitney Lovell, HRC State and Municipal Legislative Program Manager
Yesterday I was honored to present Mayor Philip Levine an award celebrating Miami Beach, Florida’s perfect score on the Municipal Equality Index. Miami Beach is the first city to successfully self-submit themselves to be rated by the MEI.
Miami Beach’s perfect score on the MEI is cause for much celebration. Miami Beach is in a state that does not have statewide relationship recognition or non-discrimination laws, so the 100 point lift was made completely by the city and their citizens alone. And by submitting themselves to the MEI, Miami Beach has demonstrated to their LGBT citizens that they are a welcomed and important part of the community.
The Municipal Equality Index (MEI) examines the laws, policies, and services of municipalities around the country and rates them on how inclusive they are of LGBT people. For more information about the MEI, please visit: www.hrc.org/mei. Miami Beach’s scorecard is located here. Also, if your city is not rated in the MEI and you would like to self-submit, visit here.
