Today, Representative Ken Dunkin, the leader of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus, announced he will be a chief cosponsor of the marriage bill in the House.  After months of heavy grassroots and legislative lobbying, Rep. Dunkin lent his support to the bill saying in part in a statement prepared for the Illinois Unites for Marriage Campaign, “For me, this is about equality and equal treatment under the law.  I have always believed that discrimination is wrong, no matter whom it targets.”
Rep. Dunkin’s support is echoed by numerous leaders in the African American community across Illinois. Since January, HRC’s Senior Field Organizer Ryan Rowe, and Associate Director of the Religion and Faith Project Rev. MacArthur Flournoy, have been on the ground in Illinois helping to secure and coordinate this support.
