This morning Jason Collins sat down with George Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America to discuss his coming out process and his hopes for the future.
Though Collins said he never set out to be the first openly gay player, he was ready to raise his hand.
"When you finally get to that point of acceptance there's nothing more beautiful than just allowing yourself to really be happy and to be comfortable in your own skin," he said.
Collins said he chose the jersey number 98 to honor Matthew Shepard, who was killed for being gay in brutal hate crime in 1998.
Since his public announcement, Collins has received an outpouring of support, including a call from President Obama.
While he's focused on his team and his career at the moment, Collins hopes his future will bring marriage and a family.
