Last night, transgender rights advocate Janet Mock appeared on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight” to discuss the release of her new book Redefining Realness. The interview focused a good deal of time on the parts of her book that talk about her medical transition, her disclosure of her gender history to her boyfriend, and inaccurate text like “was a boy until age 18” was displayed under her on the screen. This interview came on the heels of a problematic interview where Katie Couric focused on the medical transition of Laverne Cox and Carmen Carrera.
After heated Twitter exchanges among Mock, her supporters and Morgan after the interview aired, Janet will rejoin Piers on tonight’s show to have what she says she hopes will be a fruitful discussion.
As more and more transgender Americans stand up and share their stories, members of the media have a responsibility to ensure coverage is fair, accurate, and culturally competent. Janet Mock should be commended for sharing her story so publicly and we hope her appearance this evening on Piers Morgan Tonight will lead to a dialogue that will teach us all how we can treat transgender people with the dignity and respect all of us deserve.
