In an interview announcing her transition, fashion star and international model Andreja Pejic tells People Magazine she “always dreamt of being a girl.”
"I want to share my story with the world because I think I have a social responsibility," Pejic told People. "I hope that by being open about this, it becomes less of an issue."
Pejic made headlines by appearing in both men and women’s fashion shows, breaking down fashion norms around the gender binary, and becoming one of the most famous gender nonconforming models of our time.
Pejic told People that she is enjoying this new part of her life. "Every day is like a new revelation. I'm more comfortable than ever,” she said.
"I would also like to to reach out to all young gender non-conforming youth out there: I know it’s hard, I’ve been there, but remember it’s your right to be accepted as what you identify with—you deserve the same respect as any other human being on this planet," Pejic said on her Tumblr page. "As a transgender woman I hope to show that after transition (a life-saving process) one can be happy and successful in their new chapter without having to alienate their past. Most importantly differences should not equal divisions, let’s all stand together in union."
HRC celebrates Andreja, as well as other transgender icons, such as Laverne Cox's and Janet Mock, who have recently paved the way for increased visibility in the transgender community. We also encourage the industry’s continued spotlight of models who are gender nonconforming and genderfluid.
