Monday night, the Indianapolis City-County Council voted 22 – 6 to approve a resolution opposing HJR-6, the effort to send a ban on same-sex marriage to the ballot in 2014. In an unusual move, Mayor Greg Ballard (R), signed the resolution on Friday, three days prior to the City-Council passage. With this move, the council joins businesses, such as Eli Lilly, Co., and Cummins, as well as universities across the state, including Indiana University, in voicing opposition to the bill.
Freedom Indiana, the campaign to defeat HJR-6, is mounting significant pressure on legislators to vote against the resolution. With a statewide, bipartisan coalition of individuals, businesses, faith leaders, civil rights and community organizations, they have already facilitated more than 10,000 contacts to legislators and have activated volunteers to get involved from South Bend to Richmond and everywhere in between.
HRC is a founding partner of the Freedom Indiana campaign and has provided technology and tools to make it easier for volunteer to engage opponents of HJR-6 to speak out.
Over the coming months, we will continue to fight to keep this anti-LGBT constitutional amendment from ever seeing the light of day in November, 2014.
