Today HRC proudly raised the Illinois state flag above its headquarters in Washington, D.C. to celebrate the state’s marriage equality victory.
Earlier this week, the Illinois House of Representatives voted 61 to 54 to pass the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act.
The bill now moves to the governor to sign the marriage equality legislation into law, confirming the Land of Lincoln as the fifteenth state, plus the District of Columbia, where loving and committed same-sex couples can marry.
HRC was part of the successful Illinois Unites for Marriage campaign, which helped generate more than 34,000 phone calls to state lawmakers, more than 81,000 emails, and nearly 30,000 postcards. To find out more about HRC’s work in Illinois, visit http://www.hrc.org/resources/entry/hrc-in-illinois.
