On Saturday, HRC was proud to sponsor the 23rd Annual Transgender Unity Banquet in Houston as a Scholarship level sponsor. The largest transgender event held in Houston each year, the Houston Transgender Unity Committee (HTUC) organizes the Houston Transgender Unity Banquet each year.

The banquet raises money for scholarships, Houston Pride activities, Houston Transgender Day of Remembrance, annual recognition awards and small grants.

HRC Senior Regional Field Organizer Ryan Wilson joined HRC Board of Directors member Ian Barrett, HRC Board of Governor member Lou Weaver, and HRC Houston steering committee members Lisa Madry and Krystal Gilliam at the banquet. Judge Phylis Frye, recently profiled in the New York Times as the nation's first openly transgender judge, also attended.

During the course of the evening, numerous awards were presented to leaders and organizations that support transgender issues in Houston. Most notable, Equality Texas was presented with a Champions Award. Local activists Fran Watson, who is currently serving as Faith Organizer with the Houston Unites campaign, also received an award.

Keynote speaker Kate Bornstein challenged the diverse audience to continue to create spaces for gender inclusion and work together to be a family. The leaders gathered that night in Houston represent a collective group united in their commitment to advancing transgender concerns in Houston.
