Today, HRC launched a major national survey of LGBTQ people’s experiences with taking both paid and unpaid leave from work. The survey is open to LGBTQ people over age 18. Eligible adults can take the survey here for a chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card.

Every year, millions of Americans experience significant life events including childbirth, adoption, medical treatment and recovery, or the need to care for a loved one. However, no federal law and only a few states guarantee paid leave, forcing too many to risk losing their job to care for themselves or a loved one.

LGBTQ workers and their families are particularly at risk, given the chilling reality of workplace discrimination, their increased likelihood of living at or below the poverty line, and the lack of explicit job protections at the state and federal level. Additionally, employer policies and laws regarding leave do not always recognize the full diversity of our families or LGBTQ-specific medical needs, ranging from surrogacy and adoption to gender confirming therapies.

This survey seeks to explore these barriers, challenges and experiences regarding taking, or choosing not to take, leave from work. It will also help reveal how LGBTQ workers and their families are managing taking leave to welcome a child, care for loved ones, and support their own health and recovery.

This research will help us support and fight for the right of all Americans to be able to balance their work, their health and their family -- regardless of who they are or who they love. You can help by sharing the survey on Facebook or Twitter.
