This post comes from Nelson Araujo, a member and political co-chair of the HRC Las Vegas steering committee
Under the leadership of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), the United States Senate made history earlier this month, passing S.744, the Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill, with bipartisan support. HRC leaders and volunteers in Nevada were overjoyed knowing that both Senators, a Democrat and a Republican, supported the bill, which would give thousands of LGBT Nevadans and Americans a path to citizenship and legal recognition under the law.
The work is not done; the focus now shifts to the House of Representatives, where Republicans control the chamber. That’s why HRC volunteers in Las Vegas partnered with Mi Familia Vota, a national organization working to unite the Latino community and its allies to ensure social and economic justice through increased civic participation, to contact HRC members and supporters in Nevada about the importance of this bill. Volunteers transferred HRC members directly to their Congressperson's office, where they were able to leave a message voicing their support for this important legislation and urging them to do the same. HRC members were very supportive of this initiative and welcomes the opportunity to contact their representative.
