Freedom SummerYouth activists from across the nation convened in Jackson, Mississippi to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer—a notable moment in American history when hundreds of people from across the country showed up in the South to challenge the disenfranchisement of African Americans.

HRC Youth and Campus Engagement Manager, Samantha Master, and Project One America consultant, Ashley Jackson presented a workshop entitled To Be Young, Gifted and a Black Queer Feminist: Queering the Agenda. The workshop discussed the development of Black Queer Feminism through the years, articulated the concept of black queer feminism, discussed how to apply it to an effective organizing lens, and provided participants with the language and skills to talk to intersectional communities around criminalization, worker’s rights, immigrant justice, health care.

HRC’s Project One America is a lead sponsor of the Mississippi Freedom Summer 50th Anniversary Conference June 23-29, 2014.
