What an exciting weekend it was here in Chicago. The HRC Chicago Dinner took place on Saturday, November 16th at the Fairmont Hotel. With a record number of guests in attendance the dinner celebrated the successful marriage campaign here in the State of Illinois. HRC is a proud member of the Illinois Unites for Marriage campaign.
Other coalition members joined the dinner with representatives from Lambda Legal, Equality Illinois, ACLU & the Urban League in attendance.
Awards were given to those that helped make marriage equality possible in Illinois:
Groupon's Corporate Equality Award is in recognition of it being one of the first companies to endorse marriage in Illinois as well as making a marriage equality campaign video staring Groupon employees. This is also Groupon's first year on HRC's Corporate Equality Index where they achieved a 100% score.
Dr. Rev. Martin was recognized with his Community Equality Award for his role in securing pastors to testify on behalf of the bill before the Illinois Assembly. Even though they ended up waiting into the night to testify, the pastors were determined to let a positive religious voice be heard on the issue.
Linda Johnson Rice's Ally for Equality Award was in recognition of not only her op-ed piece in the Sun Times, but also for her work in the field of diversity and inclusion.
Two outstanding leaders in the Illinois legislature were also recognized, Rep. Greg Harris & Sen. Heather Steans. These legislators were the lead sponsors in the respective chambers and were crucial in getting this bill passed.
Finally the Leader for Equality Award was given to Governor Pat Quinn for his support of Marriage Equality in the State of Illinois. The excitement mounts as the signing ceremony for the bill will be held on Wednesday, November 20 adding another state to the marriage equality column.
Look for the next post highlighting the signing ceremony of the Illinois Marriage Equality Bill!
