The month of June marks National LGBT Pride Month. Pride events are held nationwide throughout the month in cities big and small. Members of the LGBT community and their allies gather at festivals and parades to celebrate the progress that has been made, but also to remember that there is more work to be done.
The first pride marches were held in 1970 to commemorate the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Every year, HRC attends pride events to connect with greater numbers of LGBT individuals and speak with them and their allies about HRC's work.
This June, HRC has joined Macy’s in commemorating National LGBT Pride Month. Macy’s campaign, Pride + Joy, will feature HRC products, in-store events and participate in 23 pride events. Exclusive HRC merchandise will be available with taglines such as ‘Everyone – Everywhere’ and ‘I Stand On the Right Side of History’
On Saturday the White House released a statement from President Obama recognizing the successes of the LGBT movement and current struggles, including the passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). President Obama proclaimed, “As progress spreads from State to State, as justice is delivered in the courtroom, and as more of our fellow Americans are treated with dignity and respect -- our Nation becomes not only more accepting, but more equal as well. During Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month, we celebrate victories that have affirmed freedom and fairness, and we recommit ourselves to completing the work that remains.”
