Post submitted by Katie Brennan, HRC Field Organizer in Virginia Beach, VA

HRC virginia canvass launch organizersThis past Saturday, exactly one month before voters head to the polls in Virginia, I hosted an HRC canvass launch in Virginia Beach. The event brought together our volunteers from across the Hampton Roads region to talk about the importance of this election for the LGBT community and what pro-equality leadership would mean for Virginia.

HRC canvass launch organizerAt the canvass launch we shared our personal stories along with stickers, donuts and cheer. Virginia Beach School Board member Joel McDonald kicked off our canvass and talked about the importance of our field efforts:

"The reality is that field work is so important in this election because we have to turn out our Democratic voters. They’ve got to be talked to - whether on the phone or at their door, they have to be encouraged to come out and vote.  Studies show that this helps a lot. You can talk about the advertisements that are put out there and the lit pieces that are sent out in the mail, but nothing is as effective as someone at your door or on the phone talking with you about coming out to vote."

After a training and discussion of best practices for knocking on doors, our volunteers spread out across the region to talk to voters about our pro-equality ticket, but not before we snapped a shot of our group with our “Virginia is for Lovers of Equality” T-shirts.
