Post submitted by Donna Payne, Former HRC Associate Director of Field Outreach
This July, the Human Rights Campaign continued its annual sponsorship for the NAACP LGBT Task Force meeting and reception in Las Vegas, Nevada
The NAACP LGBT Task Force is co-chaired by Julian Bond and Alice Huffman. Its members are from the national NAACP board of directors. This year, the NAACP LGBT Task Force held a special joint meeting with NAACP International Affairs Committee to discuss the challenges for LGBT people under repressive anti-LGBT laws in African nations. It was a successful meeting with over 40 people in attendance.
The speakers included Chair of International Affairs Dr. David Goatley, OutThink Partners Managing Director Charlie Rounds and Nevada Senator Pat Spearman.
Senator Spearman, who is an open lesbian, has served as a pastor at the National Ministers of Global Justice and Social Policy doing affirming trainings for USA, African, Asia, and Mexico. Also in attendance was HRC’s Associate Director of Field Outreach Donna Payne and Director of Partnerships Rev. MacArthur Flournoy.
The two HRC sponsored receptions were held on July 21 and 22 with over 200 people attending.
