Today House Democrats announced a resolution supporting the adoption of discrimination protections for LGBT people nationwide.  Congressmen Steve Israel (D-NY), Andre Carson (D-IN), Jared Polis (D-CO), and David Cicilline (D-RI) held a press conference this morning expressing their commitment to the resolution and the need for federal protections in light of this month's so-called "religious freedom" laws passed in Indiana and Arkansas. In a statement, Representative Carson referenced the widespread backlash against these anti-LGBT laws as a evidence of America's growing opposition to discrimination against the LGBT community, adding that "It's long past time for Congress to ensure that all Americans regardless of sexual orientation, and or gender identity, know that they are valued members of our society."

Members of the LGBT community face discrimination in a range of areas including housing, employment, credit, and education every day.

HRC applauds this resolution as an important step towards improving the lives of LGBT people across the country.  It is time for the federal government to ensure that LGBT people are fully protected from this discrimination and have access to the shared dignity of equality nationwide.
