Senators Include Protections for Bi-National Lesbian and Gay Families in Immigration Reform Proposal

Today, Senators Reid (D-NV), Schumer (D-NY) and Menendez (D-NJ) began circulating a draft proposal for immigration reform which includes a provision to allow U.S. citizens and legal residents to sponsor their same-sex partners for residency. The provision suggests eliminating “discrimination in the immigration laws by permitting permanent partners of United States citizens and lawful permanent residents to obtain lawful permanent resident status.”

Yesterday, Louisiana LGBT advocates successfully defeated a bill which would have made adoption more challenging for same-sex couples. In response to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that a legally adopted child’s two fathers must be listed on the birth certificate, Louisiana State Senator B.L. Shaw proposed a bill to attempt to circumvent the decision.

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Doe v. Reed, a case that arose out of the Referendum 71 fight in Washington last fall where opponents of equality were ultimately unsuccessful in rolling back the state’s “everything but marriage” domestic partnership law at the ballot box. The anti-LGBT group that proposed the referendum sued to hide the names of the petition signers responsible for qualifying the measure for the ballot.

Yesterday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee accepted an amendment to the Foreign Relations Authorization Act (S. 2971) that will help the State Department address LGBT human rights concerns abroad. The amendment passed on a 12-7 roll call vote, with all Democrats and Republican Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) voting in its favor. HRC supported this amendment and urged Committee members to vote in its favor.
